Geocaching - A Treasure Hunt in Oslo, and other activities with GPS
GEOCACHING
This activity can make strolling much more exciting for the parent, and its also fun for a little older children. All you need is a phone with GPS (like iPhone) :)
But what is geocaching? From Wikipedia:
"Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing into the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (Tupperware or similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting,letterboxing, and waymarking."
You can read more about the concept here or see a 2 minute video here. I recommend to start by signing up here first, then download the app Geocaching. Then you can look up a cache in your neighbourhood or choose another area of the city that you want to explore. When you find the cache, you will often find a little surprise gift inside that you have to replace with something of the same value. By the way, you can also use the app to search for caches in other places around the world - it can make your holidays a little more exciting!
Sometimes the Geocaching fans will organise introduction meetings, such as this coming Sunday 26th of May at Vøienvolden løkkeanlegg at 12. Read more here.
Have fun treasure hunting!!!
And here´s a link to both geocaching and other fun activities with GPS :)
